A golfer’s life isn’t complete without a visit to the Emerald Isle. The imagery is well known here - rolling green pastures, ancient pubs with roaring fires, dune covered links set hard upon the sea and smiles so bright they could light the world. It would be a mistake to try to take it all in during one visit, but with the right amount of time it could be done.
The best way to tackle Ireland is to consider each or the 4 main regions.
SOUTHWEST
The most popular region for golf never disappoints. The big names like Ballybunion, Lahinch, Tralee and Waterville are must-play links. But if you settled for Dingle, Dooks, Killarney and Doonbeg, you would be just as happy. The Old Head of Kinsale isn’t too far away and is unlike anything you will ever see. But off the course is where you will be inspired. On a clear day, the ring of Kerry will blow you away. The Guinness tastes better in Ireland, and nowhere more than the lovely Southwest.
NORTH AND WEST
Perhaps the most “Irish” eexperience that can be had lies in the north and west of the country. The vistas are huge and sweeping. The golf is pure and a bit less expensive. Saying it the far northwest, Ballyliffin, Rossapenna, Portsalon and Cruit Island provide everything you could want and towns like Dunfanaghy are the perfect backdrop for building lifelong memories. Down the coast, Donegal and County Sligo are world class. For the more adventurous, the wild western coast offers up Enniscrone and Carne, which will always remain in your daydreams.
DUBLIN AND THE EAST
What could be better that links by day and enjoying vibrant Dublin by night? Portrush, the European club, the Island and County Louth are all nearby and will thrill your group. If you venture down the coast to Cork, you run into more beauties including Fota Island and Cobh golf club.
NORTHERN IRELAND
Technically part of Britain, Northern Ireland boasts a set of golf links that would be the envy of any country. Royal County Down is possibly the most majestic links we’ve ever played but it’s neighbors aren’t far behind. Portrush, Portstewart and Castlerock are fantastic, as is Ardglass, a little gem that plays along the cliffs.
